About these pages
We wish to thank all Jordanians for the friendliness and hospitality we experienced. I hope that they will experience the same when they come to Germany. We are especially grateful for the warm welcome Muna and her family gave us - we hope to see you again. And we wish to thank the men and women at the Red Sea hotel in Aqaba for their help.
We will always remind Jordan as a country where we felt welcomed. Thank you for the nice holiday.
The whole holiday including everything (visa, insurance, flight etc. and all souvenirs) was about DM 2.000 each - and that's with a high US$ exchange rate. So you maybe will be able to travel even cheaper, especially if you avoid the rather expensive trip to Jerusalem.
Most of the hotels were clean, with the possible (but rare) exception of the toilets. Some of the rooms had an "own" shower, otherwise you could use "public" showers in the hotel. If not mentioned otherwise the prices are for both of us.
City | Hotel | Address | Price | Remarks
Amman | Cairo | King Faisal Street | JD 5 | very small single room, two persons with fan and shower not very clean
Lord's | King Hussein Street | JD 10 | double room with fan, with or without shower clean
Aqaba | Red Sea | near centre | JD 8 | double room with fan and shower clean very friendly and helpful people
Wadi Rum | Rest house | you won't miss it | JD 2 each | on the roof with fresh air and full moon shower, toilets very clean
Petra (Wadi Mousa) | Petra garden | ? | JD 4 | double room without fan and shower clean
Jerusalem | Al-Arab | Khan el-Zeit Street (in the Old city) | NIS 12 each | on the roof clean
Istanbul | Özlem Pansiyon | Divanyolu, Ticarethane Sk. | TL 3 million | no fan and shower clean |
That's pretty cheap in Jordan, especially if you use the minibus. Be aware of taxi drivers, you will find a few drivers who use the taximeter, but most driver's don't. So you have to bargain. As a general rule 100 Fils per kilometer would be a fair price but you seldom get it.
From 'Abdali to the bus station in Imam Talib street we paid less than JD 1 (after we had sent away two drivers who wanted to have JD 2 finally one with a taximeter came). You can go by shared taxi too, the problem is that if you can't read Arabic very fast you simply won't know in which direction they go. You will have the same problem with the big busses in Amman - they can be quite useful but you have to ask before where they go.
Hitchhiking in Jordan is said to be easy, but you'll probably have to check if some money is
expected before you enter. We only hitchhiked once and only a short distance. Two more times somebody would just stop and give us a ride although we didn't try to stop them.
Prices for bus, minibus and shared taxis are per person.

Due to our sickness and to the trip to Jerusalem we were not able to go to several other worthy places. We were highly recommended to visit the hot springs of Hammamat Ma'in and Kerak - you should go there.
It's better to know them but sometimes it will not help you anyway. In Petra we went to have breakfast in a small restaurant and were told that the Falafel were 300 Fils. After I pointed at the board showing that Falafel were only 100 Fils the guy said that the rest was for service! He didn't look as if he could give us a 200% service so we left and paid a similar special price somewhere else.

These pages were tested with Netscape Navigator 4.0 and with the Internet Explorer 4.0. Both have different ways of interpreting cascading style sheets (CSS). I use Netscape mostly, so I have optimized the layout for Netscape. Still it doesn't look exactly as I wanted to have it - either Netscape has some difficulties with CSS or I am just too stupid (I'm rather new to CSS). Of course the pages will be readable if your browser doesn't support CSS, too.
The HTML-Code was written with Allaire Homesite, for the Arabic letters I took an evaluation copy of Pars Negar II. Pictures were made with Paint Shop Pro.
For help on HTML- and CSS-Code I used a really good German How-to: SelfHTML by Stefan Münz.
